the fascinating Barbican Estate in London, probably one of the finest examples of 70s brutalist architecture and city planning. Do I like parts of it? Yes, particularly around the Arts Centre, but as a whole I think the brutalists were way off the mark with their choice of materials. Cold, rough concrete lacks all sense of scale and affinity to its human inhabitants, and the layout too confusing and disorientating to be practical or pleasant.
